Editorial
Two of the articles in this issue of the HAFS Journal relate to two Hungerfords who share the same name, but come from different times, continents and descendants.
The twentieth century Richard Hungerford [H.9a.2b] was ethnically English, felt India was closest to ‘home’, and worked in South and Central Africa for the last part of his career. Many thanks to Elizabeth Hungerford for her painstaking transcription and editing of a valuable life-record which Richard recorded on cassette in 1985. (The article in this issue completes the narrative which commenced in Volume 9 Number 3, May 2008.)
The other Richard Hungerford is very much alive, an active researcher of the North American branch. With his sixth cousin and co-researcher Andre, he has done extensive research on the amazing life of (General) John Pratt Hungerford, a US lawyer, politician and soldier living in the decades bridging the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. General JP was deeply involved in the events which led to the independence of the United States from colonial Britain. Readers will particularly appreciate the excellent photographs and charts illustrating the text, which is supported by extensive footnotes.
Pauline Tyrrell has again written for the Journal, this time recording the 150th anniversary of the founding of Tyrrell’s Wines, celebrated at Pokolbin in 2008, in particular the interesting speech given by Ian Tyrell on this occasion.
This is the final issue of Volume Nine of the HAFS Journal, after which it enters double figures! Two decades of regular publication is a great credit to the indefatigable efforts of HAFS members who have researched, photographed and written so steadily to produce original, readable and informative material.
